Cryptocurrencies are becoming more popular, day after day. But what do we actually know about them, and how do we use them? This has been the subject of a wide range of reports, from sceptics like the Wall Street Journal’s Daniel Plemmons, to praise from the Wall Street Journal’s Daniel Plemmons.
The debate about cryptocurrencies started in earnest when a market bubble burst in early 2014 and some of the major virtual currencies like bitcoin had their value halved or went to zero. But over time they have continued to grow in popularity, and so have the number of cryptocurrencies.
Currently there are more than 1,400 cryptocurrencies in existence and by one estimate as many as a quarter of a million related services that are hosted by websites and online exchanges. This is not to mention the cryptocurrencies with their own assets and “currencies” that exist on little more than the word of users and websites.
